User Switcher
Downloads and support
Self-service guidance for installing and maintaining User Switcher on Windows. Download the current stable build below, then verify the published SHA-256 checksum before running it.
Install
Download UserSwitcher.exe for Windows x64 directly from this site and run it. Choose Install User Switcher from its tray icon and approve the Windows prompt. User Switcher copies itself into a Baker Utilities folder under Program Files, where every account on the computer can start it and only administrators can change it. It is then listed in Installed apps and on your Start menu.
- Download UserSwitcher.exe from this site.
- Run it, then choose Install User Switcher from its tray icon and approve the Windows prompt.
- In every other account you want to switch between, open UserSwitcher.exe from the Baker Utilities folder under Program Files, then tick Show in Start menu in Settings (the cog at the top right of the User Switcher window). You can delete the downloaded file.
Microsoft Edge may ask you to Keep the download
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen often flags uncommon executables that are not Authenticode-signed. PDFUtil, Screenshot Capture, Notepad++ Clone, Environment Variable Configurator and User Switcher currently ship as unsigned bundles, so Edge may show a warning. Some Edge versions ask you to choose Keep. Some also ask for Keep anyway. That warning is a reputation and publisher check. It does not mean a Baker Utilities checksum failed. Keep the file only when you started the download from this site. A matching SHA-256 checksum confirms that the downloaded bytes match the published release. It does not itself prove publisher identity.
- After the download starts, open Downloads in Microsoft Edge.
- Open the menu for UserSwitcher.exe and choose Keep only when you started the download from this site.
- If Edge shows a further SmartScreen prompt, open the Delete menu and choose Keep anyway.
Some Edge versions finish the download after Keep. Some show a further Keep anyway prompt. Optional: verify the SHA-256 checksum before you run the file. Do not run it if the checksum does not match.
Verify the SHA-256 checksum (Optional)
A SHA-256 checksum is a fingerprint of the downloaded file. Use it to confirm that UserSwitcher.exe matches the published release before you run it. A matching checksum does not itself prove publisher identity. Do not run the file if the checksum does not match.
- Download UserSwitcher.exe and the matching .sha256 file from this page, or copy the SHA-256 value shown under File details and checksum.
- Open PowerShell in the folder that contains the downloaded executable.
- Paste the compare command below. PowerShell reports whether the checksum matches.
- If the checksum does not match, do not run the file. Download it again from this site.
Compare against the published release
if ((Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 .\UserSwitcher.exe).Hash -eq 'c4d706460d87f42a913d28ef5f5870e6ff299d7bbe64e9e9a2ac61af4c1743f7') { 'Checksum matches' } else { 'Checksum does not match. Do not run this file.' }Updating
Once installed, User Switcher checks the signed HTTPS stable manifest shortly after it starts and once a day, and tells you when a new version is available. When you choose Install update and approve the Windows prompt, it downloads the new executable, compares its SHA-256 hash with the published value and checks the new version starts before it replaces anything. If any check fails, the update stops and the installed version stays in place. The copies running in every signed-in account then restart into the new version on their own.
Rollback
Installing an update keeps the version it replaced. To go back to it, run UserSwitcher.exe --rollback from the Baker Utilities folder under Program Files and approve the Windows prompt. If a release is withdrawn, Baker Utilities will point the stable download back to the last known-good version and document the change on the release notes page.
Uninstall
Remove User Switcher from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. It closes User Switcher in every account and turns off Start when I sign in for every account. Each account's settings and any saved passwords are kept.
